Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common but often misunderstood condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it– most often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. This tissue responds to hormonal changes each month, which can cause inflammation, scar tissue, and pain.

Endometriosis occurs in about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. It is most often diagnosed in women in their 30s and 40s.

Symptoms can vary widely and may include painful periods, pelvic pain between cycles, pain during intimacy, and sometimes difficulty getting pregnant. Symptoms can sometimes overlap with other conditions which can make diagnosis challenging. Diagnosis typically involves a detailed history, pelvic exam, imaging to rule out other conditions, and in some cases laparoscopy.

While there is currently no cure, effective treatments are available to manage pain and protect fertility. Options may include hormonal therapies, pain management, and minimally invasive surgery to remove endometriosis lesions.
