Perimenopause/Menopause and Hormone Replacement

Menopause is an inevitable stage in every woman’s life, marking the end of menstrual cycles and reproductive ability. It’s officially diagnosed  when you have gone a full 12 months without a period, typically occurring between ages 45-55. The average age in the United States is 52. The years leading up to this are known as perimenopause. Perimenopause can start several years earlier and bring hormonal fluctuations that cause noticeable changes in your body and well-being.

Common Symptoms

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability
  • Changes to the menstrual cycle
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during intimacy
  • Changes in libido
  • Weight changes or changes in body composition
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Hair thinning or changes in skin texture

Why do these changes happen?

As your ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, the hormonal balance that has guided your menstrual cycle shifts. Major fluctuations in in hormone levels occur during perimenopause. These changes can affect nearly every system in the body – from temperature regulation and mood to bone health and cardiovascular function.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

HRT can be a safe and effective way to reduce or eliminate many of these symptoms. This treatment replaces the hormones your body no longer produces in adequate amounts.

HRT can be delivered in several forms and at Grace Gynecology we are happy to offer an array of options to women ensuring that we can come up with a treatment plan that will work for every woman. Some examples of ways to take hormones include pills, skin patches, gels, creams, or vaginal applications. We also offer bioidentical pellet therapy. The choices depends on your symptoms, health history, and preferences. For many women, a personalized hormone plan can significantly improve quality of life during and after menopause.

What if I am not a candidate for HRT or I don’t want to take hormones?
